Tubular heat exchangers are devices generally used for heat transfer. They are used to ensure heat transfer between two fluids. Tubular heat exchangers are used in many industrial and commercial applications and come in different types and designs.
The basic structure of a tube heat exchanger is a box containing interlocking tubes. While one fluid passes through the inner tubes (usually the heat carrier fluid), the other fluid passes around the outer tubes (usually the heat transferring or sinking fluid). Heat transfer between two fluids occurs through the walls between the pipes.
Tubular Heat Exchangers According to Purpose of Use
There are several types of tubular exchangers, but the most common are:
- Straight Pipe Heat Exchangers: It has a simple structure and consists of intertwined straight pipes. Heat transfer occurs when two fluids pass through these pipes respectively.
- Spiral Tube Heat Exchangers: The tubes are arranged in a spiral shape. This design provides greater surface area and therefore more effective heat transfer.
- Covering and Tube Heat Exchangers: In these exchangers, one fluid circulates in the pipes and the other fluid circulates around these pipes. While the fluid around the pipes takes or gives away heat, the fluid in the inner pipes acts as a conductor or carrier of heat.
The advantages of tube heat exchangers include features such as effective heat transfer, durability, easy maintenance and installation. These are widely used for heat recovery and process control in many industrial applications requiring heat transfer.
