In gasoline engines, the gas and air mixture is sucked into the cylinders and compressed and ignited by the spark plug. In diesel engines, only air is sucked in and compressed and then fuel is injected into the compressed air. The fuel is ignited using the increased temperature of the compressed air. Diesel engines compress the intake air more than gasoline engines. In this case, the increased compression ratio of the Diesel engine provides more efficiency.
